This year, guests gathered at Jimmy Z’s Plates and Shakes to mark the 16th celebration of Thanksgiving at the local restaurant with a free to the community turkey dinner provided to all comers — an example of the spirit of Thanksgiving that continues to endure throughout American homes.

The eponymous owner, Jimmy Zisovski, said he started this tradition as “17 years ago, the senior living center was holding a Thanksgiving for seniors when they stopped.”

Wanting to continue a communal event, he started hosting dinners at his restaurant, where the tradition has been growing ever since. As the years have gone by, he’s changed the date to Thanksgiving Eve, enjoying greater success with more community support. He then started a donation drive for a local charity, Brockport Food and Toy Shelf. This year, they were able to raise $510. The hope is to grow a strong community spirit through communal meals, but he can’t quite say how its grown outside the restaurant.

The ingredients for the feast included the two centerpieces of the classic Thanksgiving dinner — multiple 38lb turkeys from Ridgecrest Turkey Farm and stuffing made of various types of breads — a full cart of bread was purchased ahead of time.

All in all, 125 dinners were served during this event. It can be said this is a great example of a local business giving back. While Zisovski says “it isn’t for me to say” whether this practice would be recommended for other businesses in the various hamlets, villages, towns, and neighborhoods making up the Rochester metro area, it’s definitely become a rewarding tradition in a local’s favorite plate place.

Jimmy Z’s Plates and Shakes can be found in Brockport village at 53 Main St. Brockport New York, 14420. The restaurant focuses on both milkshakes along with the classic Rochester area specialty, the plate. In all it’s traditional configurations along with two innovations — the Jimbolaya Plate, a Country Sweet sauced up beauty and the Barbie Q, chicken fingers or BBQ pulled pork, cheddar cheese, on top of french fries and mac salad. With many other great dishes, including vegetarian options, the restaurant stands strong as a beacon for all fans of guilty pleasures.

While this holiday is all about giving thanks for what you have, it also has a spirit of giving to those who don’t; as such, it shouldn’t be ended without elaborating on the aforementioned charity featured in Jimmy Z’s donation drive. More information on the Brockport Toy and Food shelf can be found online at Brockport Village’s website: http://www.brockportny.org/news/news-announcements/478-toy-shelf-food-shelf-matt-s-coats-donations.

According to its Facebook page, in 2018, 141 families were helped by the local volunteers. Donations are currently being accepted for 2019; the effort is to help area families provide new toys for children aged seventeen or younger. The food shelf provides nonperishable food items and toiletries for citizens in need.
