Movie star and leading actress in “Jane the Virgin” Gina Rodriguez is in the spotlight due to a wave of backlash following a social media post in which she uses the n-word. Despite multiple public apologies, Rodriguez has been met with criticism.

The American actress has deleted the original video showing her singing “Ready or Not” by The Fugees, but not before the post was saved by on-lookers who shared it across social media, according to CNN.

When the original video surfaced on Tuesday, Oct. 15, Rodriguez posted a follow up video responding to negative comments from viewers.

“I just wanted to reach out and apologize. I am sorry,” she said. “I am sorry if I offended an yone.”

The apology only stirred up the controversies as Rodriguez was thought to be insincere by many people on Twitter and Instagram. Various online groups profiled Rodriguez as a racist after her second video, claiming she has given the public enough reasons to think she is hateful.

While Rodriguez took the brunt of the backlash, some viewers began pointing fingers at others who use discriminatory words as song lyrics.

“I love how [people] are trying to cancel Gina Rodriguez for saying the n-word but haven’t cancelled Cardi B for it,” Joe Zolanski wrote on Twitter.

Several hours after her apology, Rodriguez posted another apology on her personal Instagram page, according to Vox.

“In song or in real life, the words that I spoke should not have been spoken,” she wrote. “I have some serious learning and growing to do and I am so deeply sorry for the pain I have caused.”

Conversation regarding the ethics behind voicing discriminatory song lyrics continued among viewers, but a majority of those following Rodriguez’s incident recalled her past racial scandals. In previous instances, Rodriguez has been criticized for looking down on the black community, an idea stemmed from multiple cases. Despite her history, the use of prejudice terms through any form of communication impacts everyone and hurts all.

The outrage behind Rodriguez’s actions is ongoing, as several online communities continue to discuss topics of race and uses of standard morals when appropriating another culture through the means of musical lyrics.
