After having one of the strongest campaigns in 2019, hip-hop newcomer DaBaby is back for his second project of the year, “Kirk.” The newest album from DaBaby comes just seven months after dropping his debut album “Baby On Baby.” After seeing major success from his debut album, landing big features and appearing on XXL 2019 freshman list, DaBaby has become one of the hottest names in the world of hip-hop.

With a new found fame, DaBaby had a lot of noise surrounding the release of “Kirk.” With a lot to prove and a chip on his shoulder, the confident MC from Charlotte, North Carolina proved why he is a force to be reckoned with.

The title of the album comes from his own last name. The reason for taking this angle was to show pride for his blood while dedicating the project to his late father who passed away suddenly in March of 2019.

The 13 track project includes features from Kevin Gates, Chance The Rapper, Lil Baby and Migos, making for an interesting supporting cast. These features compliment DaBaby nicely, adding more depth and expanding to different demographics inside the hip-hop realm.

DaBaby kicks off the fun with “Intro” which was used as the leading single for the album. The instrumental is uplifting, followed by a unique flow from DaBaby. He discusses his journey to this point in his career, losing his father and his dedication to the people closest to him.

This track is prety average in my opinion, but I can see why fans would eat it up. It’s different, but there isn’t anything that catches my ear specifically.

The song that stood out to me was the fourth track on the list, “Vibez.” The upbeat, bass bumping track is a catchy tune. That caught my attention from top to bottom. As a fan of his music, this is the delivery I look for from DaBaby.

“IPhone” and “Bop” left a mark on my listening experience through strong lyricism and up-tempo instrumentals. DaBaby provides catchy hooks, while telling the story surrounding his recent success and the partners he is involved with.

I thought it was a nice touch to re-record his XXL freestyle on the outro. The video of the original freestyle took over the internet after it surfaced. His appearance on the 2019 XXL freshman list helped him climb even further up the hip–hop latter. Adding this to the project helped stay true to the success theme of the album.

Overall, this album is definitely one of the stronger to hit streaming services in 2019. However, this isn’t saying much considering how weak this year has panned out to be for the hip-hop genre. DaBaby has a distinct flow but needs more expansion if he wants to continue to top the charts.
