London-based alternative pop duo, Oh Wonder has made a shining return with the release of its new single, “Hallelujah,” on Sept. 5. It serves as an invitation to the band’s new musical era approaching the anticipated release of its third studio album. “Hallelujah” is a hopeful song that grabs the attention of many, while trying to inspire and encourage.

“Hallelujah” is everything Oh Wonder is and will be in the future, a catchy anthem meant to keep you locked in for an enjoyable melodic journey.

We are introduced to “Hallelujah” by whispery and sweet vocals, assisted by warm piano notes, making the song inviting and bright, typical of the band’s overall work. As the song progresses, so does the tempo, becoming more urgent and earnest by using bass and layered vocals. The song then blooms to glorious heights through the chorus, a beautiful dance of euphoric lyrics and sounds that screams positivity.

From the first listen, you will instantly notice this song is special. The vocals are warm and the conjoined singing of both band members creates a unity that is unforgettable. The song is full of heart and hope that gives a very important message of following your ambitions no matter how people may take it.

A reason behind the special traits “Hallelujah” holds, as a song, is through its lyrics. Listening through the song makes you realize there is a story to be told. The song tells the story of someone that has been underestimated by their surroundings, having nowhere to go as a person. It is a piece of hope, telling the person to exceed everyone’s expectations despite the constant doubt that is cast upon them. The lyrics in the pre-chorus such as, “Some days I don’t think my momma thinks I’m good enough to be a superstar/ But one day I will show her I’m a diamond in the rough, I’ll be a superstar” shows the empowerment that is intended through the song.

In all, “Hallelujah” has become a track that I will always cherish because of its message and all-around importance. Oh Wonder never fails to deliver to the table, the love and support “Hallelujah” gives off is something that can be inspiring for so many. It reminds listeners to be themselves and remain strong while following their dreams.
