Los Angeles, California based indie rock band Wallows has finally released its much anticipated debut album “Nothing Happens.”

This 11 track, guitar-driven record has been long awaited since the release of its first single “Pleaser” in April 2017, which reached number two on Spotify’s “Top 50” viral songs of 2017 and continues to be one of the band’s most popular singles.

Composed of Braeden Lemasters, Cole Preston and Dylan Minnette, Wallows was created as a garage band by three hometown friends. Established in a music camp, the band was originally named “Join the Band,” which would play small shows in California. This eventually led to it getting the opportunity to play at Warped Tour in 2011.

Now, you may be asking yourself, “Hmm, Dylan Minnette, that name sounds familiar.” Minnette is also a renowned actor, sporting lead roles in “Lost,” “Awake” and his most popular role, “13 Reasons Why.” Minnette has been acting since adolesence with smaller roles in movies and television shows, but we are here about Minnette’s band, not his acting career.

Leading up to the release of “Nothing Happens,” Wallows had released a surplus of singles, which looked like it would accumulate to an album, but have remained as singles. In 2017, four singles were released, while the same went for 2018. All had a different feel and sound, showing Wallows had a large range of style it could work with. One variable stayed constant though, and that is the powering and driving guitar sounds throughout all the songs.

With an 80s-esque feel mixed into indie rock, Wallows appeals to a whole host of music fans. “Nothing Happens” is a collection of feel-good rock songs, but even the slower tracks keep that sensation, like on “Worlds Apart” and “Do Not Wait.” With catchy electric guitar choruses such as in “Treacherous Doctor” and “Remember When,” you may feel your foot tapping without you even realizing it. As some would call it surf rock, “Nothing Happens” is a very summery record aimed for warmer weather and longer days.

With each of the 11 tracks, Wallows tackles topics that hone in on singular feelings and emotions. Fixated on relationships and heartbreak, each member adds a layer of feeling to the track. One of the most popular tracks on the album is “Are You Bored Yet?” and features Clairo, a popular indie singer from Syracuse, New York. Within an argument between two people dating, this song shows us the story of both sides in a relationship slowly losing interest with each other and the consequences of it. Both Minnette and Clairo reminisce of the most memorable times they had, but end up facing unfortunate reality.

While Wallows is just starting out, we can expect a lot from the group in the future. With “Nothing Happens” reaching the top in iTunes and Spotify charts, it shows its rapid popularity in the indie rock scene. Stay tuned.
