On Thursday, March 7, former One Direction member Louis Tomlinson released a heart-wrenching single titled "Two of Us." What stood out to fans was the fact that it was written about his late mother Johannah Deakin, who died on Dec.16, 2016 after a long term battle with leukemia.

Three years later, Tomlinson has come out and addressed his feelings about his mother's death through his lyrical and musical ability. During the process of the song being released, his fans stood behind him on social media, and after the release some even took to his mother’s social media accounts to show support.

The song broke many hearts, with people commenting about how unbelievably sad it was. The song starts out with, "It's been a minute since I called you/ Just to hear the answerphone/ Yeah, I know that you won't get this/ But I'll leave a message, so I'm not alone/ This morning I woke up still dreaming/ With memories playing through my head/ You'll never know how much I miss you/ The day that they took you, I wish it was me instead." Tomlinson's voice cracks on the last line, showing just how much emotion and heart he put into the song and how much it means to him.

The death of a family member is hard for anyone to get through, especially for those closest to them. Grief is an emotion that people go through in stages; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Many fans are viewing this song as Tomlinson's acceptance of his mother's death.

Between the time left One Direction and released “Two of Us,” Tomlinson released four other singles and each of them have a faster, more upbeat tempo. Contrary to those, "Two of Us" has a slower tempo and a softer feel to it, which helps the listener relate and empathize with the pain that the singer feels through the song.

Tomlinson tells a story through his lyrics of how he won't let the memory of his mother go until the day he dies. He interprets a saying that his mother had told him when he was young like, '"Don't give up/You can do it day by day."' In the chorus, saying "I'll live one life for the two of us." In the bridge, he also sings, "Oh, I swear to God you're living/ Through everything I'll ever do," which is another way he is expressing that he will be living for himself and his mother.

The singer also alludes to his own death, singing "I could feel your blood run through me/ You're written in my DNA/ Looking back in every mirror/ I know you'll be waiting, I'll see you again." This doesn't necessarily mean that he wants to die, it could mean that he believes that when he does die, he will see his mother again. It expresses hope for an afterlife with her, to spend the time that he didn't have because of his fame.

What also touched a lot of fans’ hearts was the support of his former band member, Niall Horan. Horan posted a picture of Tomlinson's single cover and captioned it, "Tommo has a new song out and it’s stunning .go get it people . @louist91." Some commented on the post about how the nickname "Tommo" brought on feelings of nostalgia but also sadness from the band’s split.

Tomlinson also announced that he was going to go on tour, which means that we can expect an album from him in the near future. Many speculate that like the song, the tour will also be a tribute to his mother.
