well deserved Famous actor and director, Spike Lee (above, left) won his first Oscar in his 25 year career. He has produced countless films such as "He Got Game", "BLACKkKLANSMAN", "Do the Right Thing" and more. During his acceptance speech (above, right), Lee spoke out against issues going on in America. He specifically pointed out Trump for his lack of actions as president.

With the 2020 presidential campaign right around the corner, many celebrities, public figures and politicians have already started to voice their political opinions across multiple media platforms.

The most recent stunt came at the 2019 Oscars where film director Spike Lee got the chance to let his voice be heard. After being nominated four times in the past, Lee was finally awarded his first ever Oscar in February for his film “BLACKkKLANSMAN”.

He was congratulated by the crowd with a roaring applause, followed by a bear hug from Samuel L. Jackson who presented the well deserved Oscar. Lee came prepared for his acceptance speech, referring to sheets of paper throughout. He started his speech acknowledging his African American ancestors and then went on to talk about the beauty of Black History Month.

“Four hundred years," Lee said. "Our ancestors were stolen from Mother Africa and brought to Jamestown, Virginia, enslaved. Our ancestors worked the land from can’t-see in the morning to can’t-see at night.”

Lee continued, giving a shoutout to his mother and grandmother. He thanked his grandmother for gifting him with a college education, after she saved her social security checks for five decades.

“My grandmother who saved 50 years of social security checks to put her first grandchild - she called me Spikie-poo-she put me through Morehouse College and NYU grad film.” Lee said.

After going through the traditional speech topics, Lee wrapped things up with a message for his people heading into the 2020 election.

“The 2020 presidential election is around the corner,” Lee said. “Let’s all mobilize. Let’s all be on the right side of history. Make the moral choice between love versus hate. Let’s do the right thing! You know I had to get that in there.”

Receiving a standing ovation, Lee uplifted the crowd and many people watching from home who are hoping for a change in office for 2020. According to The Washington Post, he continued his protest in a backstage interview later that same night.

He criticized President Trump for not taking a stronger stand against the neo-Nazis following the Heather Heyer murder in 2017. According to Rolling Stone, President Trump took to Twitter to voice his opinion on what Lee had to say following his historic Oscar win.

“Be nice if Spike Lee could read his notes, or better yet not have to use notes at all, when doing his racist hit on your President, who has done more for African Americans (Criminal Justice Reform, Lowest Unemployment numbers in History, Tax Cuts, etc.) than almost any other Pres!” Trump wrote.

Trump has claimed many times throughout his presidency that he has done more for African Americans than any other president, though the statistics say otherwise.

In my opinion I think Trump needs to take a different approach heading into the next election and a possible second term.

His use of Twitter needs to be directed in a more positive way. As a leader of the country he needs to set a good example for the people of America.

If young children take the president’s behavior by example they might think it’s okay to verbally attack someone over the internet. Cyber bullying has been an issue online for years, it’s not okay for our president to not only condone that, but also take part.

When it comes to Lee, I see his speech as a positive use of his platform. Seeing someone like Lee take a stand like that is an inspiration for people who feel the same way as him, but don’t have the opportunity to voice their views.

Trump’s presidency has most definitely been one to remember. It has been full of controversy, but has also caused public figures speaking out against injustice and inequality.

Lee is one of those figures who has never been shy to speak his mind. The film director used the big stage for something bigger than just himself, he used it for the greater good of the people.
