The Seymour College Union will be transforming the Ballroom into Hogwarts on Saturday, Dec. 1, thanks to Dumbledore’s Army. From 7 to 10 p.m. the club will be hosting a Harry Potter themed Yule Ball. The event will have a host of free perks, including food which will include pizza, candy, juice, soda, chips and healthier options like a fruit plate.

As for the events of the evening, there will be mug painting, possibly cookie decorating and maybe a piñata, if the club can find an appropriate, seasonal themed piñata. There will also be music dancing and games, including clue and cards, for those who don’t like to dance. Mikayla Heiss, the club’s president, wrote in an email “it’s a great end of semester event to get a ton of free stuff and meet new people!”

For many students who may be wrapping up their first semester at Brockport or who haven’t had the opportunity to meet many people, this is a chance to meet fellow students who share similar interests.

Heiss also wrote the dress code is very relaxed. She said that some of the attendees go all out and dress up but that’s not required. Some students will show up wearing hogwarts attire and some will wear just jeans. In this way, the event differs from the Yule Ball in the Harry Potter series.

During the novel and film adaptation the characters wore elegant gowns and fancy robes. While some may show up in such attire, it is more likely that the college students in attendance will be seen dressing casually and comfortably, especially donning their house colors.

There will also be a swing dance demonstration by the Swing Dance Society. Bayli Schlierf, treasurer of the swing dance society wrote in an email the club has been doing the event with Dumbledore’s Army for several years. “Really it just makes sense: we’re a social dance club.” She even quoted the Harry Potter Character, Professor McGonagall saying “the Yule Ball is first and foremost, a dance.”

The Swing Dance Society welcomes all, even without any prior knowledge or experience in dance. The demonstration should be just as inclusive, getting students of all levels of experience involved during the event.

The event sounds like a good time to go and enjoy some music and dancing. It should be an especially good time for fans of Harry Potter. Fans like Kenny Debot think the event sounds fun.

“It goes with the theme of Harry Potter and it also gives people a chance to come together and enjoy the activities” Debot said.

Dumbeldore’s Army hosts this event every year, along with other fun Harry Potter themed events. In the past, the club has held Quidditch, sorting ceremonies and movie nights.

After the release of The Crimes of Grindelwald, the newest installment in the Harry Potter franchise, the events popularity could potentially skyrocket. It will be a way for Harry Potter fans to come together in a festive way before the end of the semester, in true Hogwarts fashion.

Students can check out the event on myBROCKPORT and find out more information about Dumbledore’s Army on the site as well. If nothing else, students should come to relax and enjoy some food before the stress of finals week hits.
