The Navy SEALs is one of the most prestigious ranks of the United States special opperations forces. To be a Navy SEAL, takes years of experience and a high amount of skill not many people possess. So, would one expect the president and the commander in chief of the military have a mass amount of respect for a man of that caliber? Probably. But, in the day and age we live in, being president comes with no rules.

President Trump has spoken, yet again, without thinking. During an interview with Fox News, Trump attacked four-star admiral William McRaven.

In the interview, Trump stated McRaven is a “fan of Hillary Clinton.” In the same interview Trump went on to say McRaven should have killed Osama Bin Laden before the time he did.

On May 2, 2011, McRaven oversaw SEAL Team Six in the raid that ended with the death of Bin Laden. According to NBC News, Trump stated, “But living in Pakistan right next to the military academy, everybody in Pakistan knew he was there. And we give Pakistan $1.3 billion a year and they don’t tell him, they don’t tell him … for years.”

Trump went on to say he ended payments to Pakistan because of its inactivity and its lack of benefit to the United States.

“They took him down but – look, look, there’s news right there, he lived in Pakistan, we’re supporting Pakistan, we’re giving them $1.3 billion a year, which we don’t give them anymore,” Trump said. “By the way, I ended it because they don’t do anything for us, they don’t do a damn thing for us.”

Trump’s attack on the military officer was uncalled for and stems from a deeper issue than Osama Bin Laden’s death. During the interview, Trump continuously called him a “Hillary Clinton Fan.”

The dislike for McRaven stems from prior actions and quotes made by him. Last year, McRaven blasted Trump, stating the president’s  attack on media outlets is “the greatest threat to democracy.”

This statement has been said many times before, but never from a high ranking special operations forces officer. McRaven went on to tell Trump to revoke his security clearance after Trump revoked former CIA Director, John Brennan’s clearance.

These comments made about Trump is what led to the outpour of displeasure by Trump.

McRaven, however, is not one to sit down and let somebody talk down on his name. In an interview with CNN, McRaven explained he did not vote for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election despite being called a “fan” by Trump.

McRaven in the same interview went on to throw some real shade at the president. “I am a fan of President Obama and President George W. Bush, both of whom I worked for,”  McRaven stated. “I admire all presidents, regardless of their political party, who uphold the dignity of the office and who use that office to bring the nation together in challenging times.”

This was perfectly said by a man who has experience with different presidents. He did not attack Trump directly, but the subliminal shade thrown at the president is unforgettable. McRaven also went on to say he stands by his prior comment of Trump being the greatest threat to democracy.

He says he stands by it because “When you undermine the people’s right to a free press and freedom of speech and expression, then you threaten the constitution and all for which it stands,” according to NBC News

Trump picked the wrong battle, this time with a man who understands and loves this country as much as he does. McRaven is a true example of a man who wants the best for this country and Trump should take notes.
