The Brockport Police Department has received complaints regarding phone calls which local residents say originate from unknown callers posing as members of law enforcement.

The content of the calls have consisted of inquiries for payments related to outstanding bills owed to BPD. According to a press release from Cheif Mark Cuzzopoli, the calls appear under the department phone number, which the police say is likely done using a phone service such as Magic Jack or VOIP.

The callers ask for payments to be transferred to Western Union, MoneyGram or Greendot “MoneyPaks,” the release states.

According to the release, “Law enforcement agencies will not attempt to collect fines or outstanding debts from citizens. Anytime someone you don’t know asks for any type of wire transfer, there is a 99 percent chance it’s a scam.”
