Last Wednesday, Vh1 aired its newest show: “Beauty Bar.” A group of makeup artists and hairdressers are working under one roof. But this roof is not big enough for its many over-the-top employees. Each of them have big personalities and even bigger aspirations to be the best.

The show opened with an introduction to what a beauty bar is and how hard they are working to make it the best way they can, and, of course, having fun while doing it.

The show introduces their shop as being in Inwood. New York City is home to hopeful artists with bigger dreams than the Big Apple itself.

These super talented artists are Thalia, a makeup artist with a sense of style and sass, Kevin, a self-proclaimed makeup prodigy, “the Harry Potter of makeup,” Vee, a color specialist who has the magic touch on hair dye, Notik, an ambitious barber and rapper, Princess, a wig maker who is very confident in her work and her wig line, Rell, a loctician who can whip up a tight dreadlock in a matter of seconds and last but not least, Henry, the owner of the House of Dolls Beauty Bar, who specializes in extensions, and his partner in crime Tess who has her eye on the prize and knows how to get to the big bucks.

All of these artists have their own underlying and deep seated issues in their lives outside of the shop. However, the bond they share with each other brings a sense of warmth and support within the shop. However, tensions seem to rise early with Princess and Rell as newcomers which builds a sense of suspense as to who will stay and go.

The Inwood shop shows the hustle and heart of New Yorkers and represents them well. It’s inspiring and relieving to see successful artists on television. They are beating odds and slaying hair and makeup all at the same time. They may not be a perfect bunch together, but they are all persistent in achieving their goals as successful artists.
