This semester, Brockport will be hosting an international film festival. The purpose of this festival is to take an overarching theme relevant to our world and to present that theme through a series of films and accompanying talks relating to the films. The theme of this year’s festival is “Identity in Conflicting Cultural Contexts,” according to The Daily Eagle. This festival is starting with a screening held by the American Democracy Project (ADP).

The ADP is an organization which is active in 250 colleges across the country. Its goal, according to the organization’s page on the Brockport website, is to inform and prepare public higher education students to be functioning and able members of the United States’ democracy.

The ADP hosted the first film of the spring, “A Good Wife”,  on Monday, Jan. 29. The film is Serbian/Bosnian in origin, but has won awards and was nominated for awards at notable film festivals such as the Sundance Film Festival. The film has already been to a film festival in New York City in 2017 before coming to Brockport.

The movie follows the events of a woman as she learns that her husband is culpable for various war crimes, and how she decides to handle this life altering news. The film was presented to students by Dijana Jelaca, Ph.D., opening the festival with potent film highlighting themes of politics, trauma and national conflict. Jelaca also gave a talk about the film after its screening in order to help students understand the cultural importance and themes which connect to the greater, broader focus of the festival as a whole.

Should this screening interest you, it is merely the opening of an entire festival which will tackle the aforementioned themes of culture and conflict. The next film to be shown in the series will be the 2017 film, “The Wound.” The film will be shown in the McCue Auditorium on Monday, Feb. 5. The schedule can be found on The College at Brockport’s master calender online.
