Women in impoverished nations face many struggles that us in the United States don’t have to face. While many know this, people don’t know how to help these women.

The College at Brockport’s club Eagles for Solidarity: Girl Up has decided to take efforts into their own hands by hosting an event to raise money for this cause.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m., Girl Up will be hosting Give to Get.

This Thanksgiving-themed event will be the second annual for the club, and will host a variety of activities. Students who attend can look forward to several performances and interactive activities, as well as food.

The overall theme of the night is as the title suggests: giving back.

“The purpose of this event is to have our community give back to these beautiful girls in developing countries through various donations,” Girl Up president Shanelle Oduro said. “We also do this for people to acknowledge how grateful they should be, knowing that these girls are fighting to be in our seat.”

Women in developing countries such as Ghana and Guatemala face many obstacles when it comes to education. According to the EFA GMR’s World Inequality Database in Education (WIDE), 95 percent of girls aged 7-16 in Somalia and 78 percent of the girls in Niger will never receive an education.

According to Oduro, another reason for hosting the event is to give some students the opportunity to have a Thanksgiving meal if they cannot celebrate with their loved ones, due to being international students or not being able to go home for the break.

It is encouraged to go to the event “dressed to impress.”

RSVPs can be made on myBrockport, but everyone is welcome to attend.
