Music Studies Department puts on a series of student concerts open to the public, where students show off their musical skills. These series of concerts have no particular theme, but will nonetheless be fun.

The first concert is on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m., will be held at Tower Fine Arts Mainstage and will feature the Brockport Xylophone-Percussion Ensemble and the Brockport Brass Ensemble. The following week on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 a.m., the Brockport Jazz Combo will be performing in the Black Box Theatre.

On Saturday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m., in the Seymour College Union Ballroom, the Brockport College-Community Orchestra will be putting on their concert in the Brockport High School Auditorium. The next weekend, on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m., the Brockport College-Community Chorus will be singing.

Resuming again in the spring, the concerts will start on Monday, Mar. 6 at 7:30 p.m. on Tower Mainstage with the faculty recital. The Brockport Xylophone-Percussion Ensemble will put on two concerts on Wednesdays, Mar. 21 and May 2 at 7:30 p.m. on Mainstage.

The Brockport College-Community Orchestra will return on Thursday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. on Mainstage. The Brockport Jazz Combo will be performing on Friday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre. To end the concerts is the Brockport College-Community Chorus on Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 on Mainstage.

Every year, the concerts help raise awareness for the music groups at Brockport. Scott Horsington, the Artistic Director and Conductor for the Brockport College-Community Orchestra and Ensembles Coordinator for the Department of Theatre & Music Studies, is optimistic about the future, due to the fact that every year, attendance increases.

“I think each year we become better at recruiting incoming freshmen, which is really the key to growing,” Horsington wrote in an email. “It isn’t widely known that there are music groups on campus (or even a Music Minor), so it’s important for us to be ‘out there’ at Orientation.”

The ensembles are open to join for everyone, regardless of a student’s major or minor.

“Registering for an ensemble is optional,” Horsington explained. “In fact, less than half of the participants are actually registered. It’s a great way to either add an extra credit if you need it, or to simply continue participating if you can’t take any more credits.”

The ticket price for students is $9, senior citizens, Brockport alumni and faculty and staff are $12 and ticket prices to the public are $17. You can order tickets at Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office, online or you can purchase tickets by calling 585-395-2787. The Box Office is open Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during performances only.
