The Brockport Doggies are off and running this season. The College at Brockport men’s rugby team has been in action since it’s creation  in 1970 by John Barclay.

The Doggies play in the highest division of rugby among some of the top colleges in New York State. They are a part of the Empire Rugby Conference, which includes the likes of Syracuse University. A club team is different than a school team for a handful of reasons.

“So basically there are no school teams,” former Doggies President Dylan Grant said. “Since rugby isn’t really played at the high school level, there are very few varsity college rugby teams in the United States. So being D1A, we play at the highest level of rugby available. Our schedule this year includes Syracuse and Binghamton, both Division 1 schools with Division 1A rugby.”

Many rugby teams consist of a conglomeration of students living in the same vicinity, rather than grouping them by school district. Due to this, not as many high school level students play rugby, and that translates into the college game as such.

This is the case for many club teams at Brockport. Brockport offers a plethora of club sports for students to choose from including: equestrian club, women’s ice hockey, and Tae Kwon Do. Even so, just because rugby is a club team, that doesn’t make it  any less of a team to be proud of.

The men’s rugby team recently faced off against the Syracuse Hammerheads earlier this month. The Hammerheads cruised to an easy 74-10 victory over the Doggies. The Doggies hopped out to an early 5-0 lead, to which the Hammerheads exceeded and never looked back from.

The teams played in a second game the same day, with the Hammerhead’s second team squeaking out a win over the Doggies by a score of 40-38. The Doggies were down 30-7 at halftime, but came storming back late in the second half, taking a 38-35 lead in the 81 minute. The Hammerheads bounced back with a try of its own in the final minutes of the game and were able to stop the Doggies from marching back down the field.

The Brockport Doggies recently played in the Can-Am Rugby Tournament over the summer. The Can-Am (Canadian-American) Rugby Tournament is an annual tournament where rugby teams from around New York gather at Saranac Lake for a 100+ team tournament. The tournament is divided into sections, with the Brockport Doggies competing in the club division.

The Doggies had a strong showing at Can-Am this past summer, ending the team’s second overall for club teams. The Brockport A team went all the way to the finals, where they faced off against the East Side Hyenas. The Doggies lost by a score of 47-19, ending its  strong run at the tournament.

The Brockport Doggies Club Rugby Team is playing high level opponents this year, and is full of history. The Doggies are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 30, away in Binghamton. The team is looking to dominate this upcoming matchup against the Binghamton Devils.
