The Department of Anthropology is hosting the 2017 Douglas A. Feldman LGBT Paper Award. The deadline for this paper is May 20.

According to a Daily Eagle press release, "This award supports the diversity mission at The College at Brockport by providing a $1,000 prize to an undergraduate student for writing an excellent paper on any cultural aspect of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender experiences."

The competition was created by Dr. Douglas A. Feldman to help sustain Brockport's diversity mission. Feldman is a professor of anthropology at Brockport.

"The reason for it is to demystify the topic so that people talk about LGBTQ issues but also make a presentation for diversity meetings," Feldman said in a previous interview with The Stylus. "When I was in college, it really was a totally taboo topic. It was considered a perversion and people didn't want to talk about it. I like the fact that the times are  changing and there is now an acceptance, a growing acceptance, in some corners for LGBTQ people and the LGBTQ identity. So I think we need to push this along in a positive way."

The theme of the paper must revolve around an aspect of the LGBTQ community and should present empirical evidence either conducted by the student or by peer reviewed academic sources. Graduates and undergraduates from any major are eligible to submit essays.

The minimum page count for the paper is nine pages and the maximum is 20. It must be in size 12 Arial font and double-spaced with in-text citations. The papers will be judged by a committee of faculty and the winner will be announced at Brockport's Fall 2017 Diversity Conference. Papers will be judged on relevance and importance of the chosen topic as well as the quality of the research and overall writing.

Papers can be submitted by emailing Feldman at dfeldman@brockport.edu.
