Tori Martinez/LIFESTYLES EDITOR The College at Brockport's Hazen Health Center and Center For Select Respect (above) have teamed up to create a column focused on providing members of the community with useful health tips and information.

Did you know a 60-minute nap can improve alertness for up to 10 hours? Think of how much work you could get done with that kind of attentiveness. Did you know that the recommended amount of time you should take to wash your hands is equivalent to humming the tune "Happy Birthday" twice, or even that the suggested daily calorie intake is dependent upon a variety of different circumstances that are personal to an individual?

If you're looking for ways to learn about and improve your health, look no further than "Hazen's Health Corner!" This column will bring you tips, tricks and hints to help both students and the general Brockport community take the necessary steps to uphold a healthy lifestyle.

Along with advice, "Hazen's Health Corner" will bring you interesting information related to nutrition, fitness, stress-reduction strategies, healthy decision making, mental health promotion, healthy relationships, sexuality, LGBTQ information as well as a variety of other topics.

This column will be written by the Student Health Advocates (SHAs for short!) and the Select Respect Peer Educators of Prevention and Outreach Services, located in Hazen Hall and in the Seymour College Union room B124.

Prevention and Outreach Services' mission statement is to "make health contagious." We work to accomplish this by providing services, programs and interventions that address the different factors that impact the health of individuals and the broader community. By spreading knowledge and awareness about healthy behaviors, we can begin the process of getting everyone talking about the importance of overall wellness.

You may be a bit familiar with the Student Health Advocates and the Select Respect Peer Educators as we are often seen on campus doing programs such as "Healthy Monday", "Party Smart", "Ultimate Wingman", "Stop. Ask. Clarify.", or just doing general tabling on different topics. You may even have seen us in the Union Square, in some of your classes, or just walking around campus. SHAs and Select Respect Peer Educators are students first and foremost and we bring you our knowledge, perspectives and experiences related to health.

We understand just how huge of a struggle upholding your health can be. Being in college can be demanding sometimes, it gets even more difficult with the added pressure of trying to maintain healthy behaviors. With our busy schedules, numerous commitments and general obligations it can be easy to forget why your overall health is important.

What many people forget is that the smallest acts can make the largest impact. The fact that you even made the conscious decision to read this section is a step in the right direction.

"Hazen's Health Corner" will not only bring you knowledge, it will bring you enjoyment as we begin on a journey to overall wellness.

Catch us every week in The Stylus as we attempt to make health contagious!
