The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team has officially kicked off its 2017 season. The Golden Eagles' first game of the season was an away match held at Alfred University Wednesday, March 1. The team played against the Alfred University Saxons and lost by one point in a close 10-11 final score.

The Golden Eagles had its second game Sunday, March 5, against the Clarkson University Golden Knights. The game ended with another loss for the Golden Eagles, 6-7.

The first quarter ended with a tie of 2-2. Neither team scored during the second quarter, keeping the score locked at 2-2. The third quarter ended with yet another tie of 2-2. Clarkson ended the stalemate in the final quarter with a score of 3-2, costing the Golden Eagles the game.

The Golden Eagles have some high expectations for the future because of the team's strong 2016 season. Last season, the team ended with an impressive 12—4 win-loss total.

In addition to its many victories, last year the Golden Eagles secured the No. 2 seed in the State University of New York Athletic Conference after a 4—2 overall season record.

The team also hosted its first SUNYAC playoff contest. Furthermore, the Golden Eagles were runner-ups in the Conference Tournament Championship in 2016.

In the SUNYAC men's lacrosse preseason poll, Brockport is posed to finish third, despite its second place finish in the past season.

"I'm okay with the SUNYAC preseason poll," Head Coach Ben Wineburg said. "It's not how you start, but how you finish."

The Golden Eagles are helmed by Wineburg. Wineburg was hired to coach men's lacrosse back in 2000, the same year that marked Brockport's first varsity season in 21 years and with Wineburg's leadership, the Golden Eagles would join SUNYAC two years later in 2002.

Wineburg was named SUNYAC Coach of the Year last season following his team's continuous success over the years.

All Wineburg wants for his players is for them to give him their best each and every day. They may win some and lose some, but Wineburg said one cannot take away their ability to work hard.

"Our goal for the season remains the same as it has in the past, to make the postseason and to give ourselves a chance to play for the SUNYAC championship," Wineburg said.

In addition to Wineburg's leadership, the Golden

Eagles are motivated by former-player-turned-Assistant-

Coach Jesse Elliott. Elliott's Brockport career lasted from 2010-13.

During this time, he received several accolades. He won several SUNYAC Lacrosse Player of the Week awards, he was named to the Second-Team All-SUNYAC and the SUNYAC All-Academic team.

Seniors on the team this season include defenders Colin Blind and Jamie Grimm, goalkeeper Conor Nowak, attackers Pete Barilla, Jake Giudice and Mark Robinson, and midfielders Brendan Fitzgerald and Joe Mikiciuk. Blind, Giudice, Nowak and Fitzgerald were All-SUNYAC selections last year.

The Golden Eagles have a game scheduled for Saturday, March 11, at 3 p.m. against the Keuka College Wolves at the Bob Boozer Field at Brockport.
