Two times a week you can find a dedicated group of students, like club president Ameera Bhanji and club coach Nathan Mart, in the James B. Fulton Natatorium pool; the new co-ed club swimming team at The College at Brockport are testing the waters in competition, proving to be strong competitors as they make more time for academics and other extracurricular activities.

Former members of the varsity men and women's swimming teams come together to make up the club team, including other students with an interest in the sport. The team swims Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., thanks to the help of the Office of Campus Recreation. Since the club doesn't have a budget - its official creation in September means it's not yet eligible for one - Campus Rec and the club had to compromise to find time in the pool.

Bhanji and her teammates, such as the club's co-creator Ellie Jones, worked hard to get to where they are now; they just competed in their second meet this past weekend on Saturday, Feb. 25.

"This team is becoming more and more legitimate, and I couldn't be happier about our success," Bhanji said. "That being said, our new team still has quite a bit of room to grow. The team is growing in size, but I am looking forward to seeing my teammates reach their full potentials in and out of the pool."

To reach this potential, the team has gathered a group of dedicated student coaches to lead the pack to success. Mart, one of these coaches, has more than 10 years of experience in the pool and is excited to use that experience to help his teammates succeed. Also a former member of the varsity swim team, he can't continue his heavy duty swimming career due to injuries.

Because of this, he is putting his energy toward watching other students make and surpass their goals.

"I just want to use my experience and knowledge to help better students in their swimming careers," Mart said.

The team is looking for support, as it continues to grow its participation and fan base. Looking forward, Bhanji feels positive about the team's future.

"I'm also excited to see my teammates stepping into leadership roles so that they can carry this team forward after I graduate," Bhanji said.
