Now in its beginning stages, the Brockport Fitness Lab, also known as B-Fit, has taken off and is ready to be utilized by The College at Brockport students and community members alike.

Born out of the exercise science program within the Department of Kinesiology, Sport Studies and Physical Education, the B-Fit Lab aims to stylize custom fitness programs tailored to target specific areas of improvement.

"Anyone from the community or from the college can come in and have a variety of tests done - anything from body composition to overall levels of fitness," Dr. Brooke Starkoff said.

Starkoff, assistant professor within the exercise science program, was a primary influence behind the creation of a fitness lab with portable equipment, one that she hopes will eventually be available to the Greater Rochester area.

According to the "Community Fitness Testing" portion of the Department of Kinesiology web page, several packages at set prices with specific focuses will be available, ranging from $50 to $150. If someone wants to get involved with the fitness testing offered by B-Fit Lab is a student at Brockport or plans on partaking in a large group, discounts are available.

"Once we get support going and get our name out there, hopefully get a steady stream of people coming in - then the students will be able to run the program and get some hands on experience," Starkoff said. "They get the opportunity to do that in some of their labs, but having the opportunity to deal with real clients and apply what they've learned from that in those tests will really be an advantage that we want them to have."

The uniqueness behind the B-Fit Lab comes with the self-assessments it provides, alongside the in-depth equipment it utilizes.

Plans to transition its management until it is, for the most part, student-run  are in motion in order to provide students in the exercise majors with field experience which will prepare them for their future careers.

The B-Fit Lab has been years in the making, a byproduct of Starkoff's research and fine-tuning; she looks forward to furthering its campus presence and success with clients, so it serves as a helpful tool in someone's fitness regimen, whether they are looking to focus on specific areas to improve upon or have a marathon to train for in the future.

The B-Fit Lab may be utilized to track training progress, learn more about individual body composition, test muscle endurance and allow students, faculty and community members alike to gain a further understanding of their fitness-based health.
