The latest Brockport Student Government senate meeting took place in the Seymour College Union Gallery at approximately 4 p.m. last Friday.

BSG President Devin Bonner announced that the core of the meeting was to vote for new senate members, along with the usual weekly report. The Club Committee representative reported there will be a 5K walk and run as a fundraiser to support the Health Care Association which will take place at a later date.

The BSG Cultural Council had their first meeting last Wednesday to discuss elections for next year's council. The Cultural Council also discussed plans for a Cultural Explosion event on April 30, as well as the  exploration of the concept for the Tunnel of Oppression.

Senator Emily Marge reported that during the Operation Valentine event more than 250 Valentine's Day gifts have been donated to homeless veterans so far.

After several reports from the representatives, BSG began voting in new senators. Among the six new senators voted in was Matthew Millace from the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.

While the senators seemed hesitant at first about electing a fraternity member into BSG as a senator, Millace took a defensive stance by reminding the council that fraternities are not realistically represented in Hollywood movies and that Pi Kappa Phi members are constantly trying to give back to their community and part of trying to have full representation in BSG includes representation with the recognized fraternities. Another unexpected election was first-year student Jordan Small.

Small was described as going "above and beyond" the application requirements and in addition to the required resume, Small submitted a cover letter describing why she wanted the position.

The council stated that it is not often that they elect a first year student as a student representative but Small's tenacity towards the position and on-campus involvement made her a good fit for BSG.

The meeting concluded at 5 p.m. with a quick reminder from Bonner that The College at Brockport President Heidi Macpherson will be attending the BSG meeting on February 24.
