Saturday Feb. 4 was a special day for both the swimming and diving teams for The College at Brockport.  It was a dual meet against Buffalo state, but most importantly it was Senior day.  Emotions were high and it was certainly a memorable day for not only the senior swimmers but the overall team comprised of first year swimmers.

"At the end of the meet, I found myself fighting back tears because this team has been amazing and I'm going to miss swimming with them and competing like we did yesterday," senior Matthew Futia said.

It has been a worthwhile season for the Brockport men's swimming team.  Despite finishing 2-4 on the season they are gearing up for a deep postseason run.

"Our meet yesterday was extremely meaningful both as our last meet of the season and personally, as my last meet competing at Brockport," Futia said. "At this time of the year though, we are mainly focusing on our championship, which is coming up in a couple weeks, rather than the score for a duel meet. So while we weren't able to get the win on the guys team, as a whole, everyone swam very well and are now more motivated for our championship." The men dropped the close duel falling to the Bengals 167-132.

Looking to the SUNYAC championship and the future he also talked about the status of the team.

"While our team's standing is not the best, we are seeing a lot of improvements in our team," Futia said. We are still a small team though, but our coaches are doing a great job recruiting and we are going to be having some great talent coming in next year."

On the women's side they had a strong performance and got to enjoy closing out the regular season with a win.  The women won the meet in dominating fashion on senior day by a score of 160-56.

Holly Jackson who is also a Brockport senior swimmer commented on the passion of her senior day "[Very], I almost started crying several times. Really proud of the whole team for not just what was accomplished here today but from how far we have come together over this season! I am going to miss swimming for Brockport so much!"

The women's team has progressively gotten better throughout this season and it showed with a solid finale versus Buffalo State on Saturday.  Although there is always more room for improvement Jackson is confident her team can make the strides to be champions.

"I think we need to be better at being able to get into the zone and deciding when to buckle down and force ourselves to have great races," Jackson said. "A lot of that is going to come from confidence, if the whole team can believe in themselves going into championships then I think some really great things are going to happen!"

I am certain both the men and the women want to leave their mark in Brockport history by winning their conference championships in a couple weeks.  The men and women's swimming and diving team will return to action on Feb.15-16 competing in the SUNYAC Championships, which are held in Buffalo.
