New semester, new legislation

Tue, Jan 31st 2017 11:45 pm

Brockport Student Government held its first weekly senate meeting of the semester Friday, Jan. 27.

The main focus of the meeting was the deliberation and passing of several pieces of new legislation in the bylaws of BSG. Vice President Danielle Fenley also presented a proposal for a recruitment matrix, a sheet for employees to determine which students are becoming involved with BSG in order to better market BSG toward certain groups.

For example, if no one employed by BSG is involved with athletics, then BSG must market better toward student-athletes.

Several of the organization's departments also gave reports including Marketing's Ryan Mietus, who gave a brief overview of the campaign boost needed for Green and Gold Fridays to enhance school spirit. Mietus outlined the new social media giveaways for Brockport beanies and scarves to students who enter to win on Twitter and who wear green and gold on Friday.

The MetroCenter representative also gave a quick report about its first event of the semester, trying to engage the graduate student majority there. A bulk of the session was dedicated to reviewing legislation, pertaining to several different aspects of BSG, such as tabling hours required of each officer. BSG is hoping to increase its presence on campus, in order to be and feel more accessible to  students.

One of the final orders of business in the meeting was the nomination and election of a new vice chairman of the Senate.

The nominated and appointed officer was Emily Marge, previously an on-campus representative. A series of club announcements followed, including Chief Justice Matthews who announced his plan to form a pep band for next fall. After the announcements, the meeting was concluded.
